The Schmidt Family History
1947

A Family
Tradition Begins
Gerhardt and Esther Schmidt purchased a local meat market in Nicollet, MN, with a vision of combining traditional German craftsmanship with the best local ingredients. From the Willkommen sign above the door to the rich aroma of their smokehouse, Schmidt’s Meat Market became known for its authentic, old-style smoking process, using whole pieces of wood to create an unforgettable flavor. Gerhardt’s original recipes, including their specialty German-style summer sausage, are still used today, marking the beginning of a legacy.
1975

The Second
Generation Steps In
In 1975, Gerhardt and Esther’s sons, Gary and Bruce, took over the business, continuing their parents’ commitment to quality and tradition. Under their leadership, the meat market became a local favorite, and the Schmidt name began winning awards, not just locally but nationally and internationally. Despite growing success, they remained true to their roots, with the traditional smoking methods and family recipes setting Schmidt’s apart from other meat markets.

Continuing the
Legacy
By 2005, grandson Ryan Schmidt became the third generation to lead Schmidt’s Meat Market. He upheld the family’s dedication to quality, craftsmanship, and award-winning products while expanding their reach. The German-style summer sausage continued to be a signature product, contributing to their continued recognition with numerous awards each year for excellence in flavor and quality.

A New Chapter with
The Good Schmidt
In 2024, Cheryl Schmidt, Gerhardt and Esther’s granddaughter, launched The Good Schmidt, carrying on the family’s tradition of bold flavors in a fresh way. While the meat market thrived with its classic products, Cheryl expanded the Schmidt legacy into sauces and seasonings, creating premium BBQ sauces inspired by the same high standards and attention to detail that have made Schmidt’s Meat Market an award-winning success for over 75 years.
Southern
Minnesota
Heritage, Since 1947
In 1947, our grandparents, Gerhardt and Esther Schmidt began their journey towards the American dream. Gerhardt, working as a meat cutter, was inspired by Esther to start his own business. They found a local butcher shop for sale but couldn't afford it. A kind recommendation led them to a farmer in town who, not wanting to lose the butcher shop, loaned them the money with a handshake.
On Friday, June 13, 1947, Schmidt's Meat Market opened its doors. Over the years, Gerhardt and Esther built a reputation for unwavering quality, family service, and incredible flavors, especially their unique German smokehouse flavor. People come from all over Minnesota and the United States to experience Schmidt's Meat Market, making it a cherished cornerstone of their community and beyond.
At The Good Schmidt, we proudly continue this tradition of quality and innovation. Our diverse range of sauces is designed to elevate any dish, and soon, we'll be expanding to include rubs, seasonings, marinades, and more. Join us in celebrating the legacy of great taste and community spirit!
